Who Writes My Story?

As years pass and seasons change, and babies grow into toddlers and toddlers into kids and kids into teenagers, life changes. There’s always a big change in every stage of our lives. As babies we learned to eat solids and to walk, but as we grew older we learned how to read, write and sing. Every chapter has its own unique and significant story that a person cannot move on in life without reading – or in this case, living.

Just as humans physically change and grow, so do humans emotionally. The teenage years are the starting point of the development of mood swings, feelings and insecurities. Most teenagers can easily feel alone, like there’s no shoulder to cry on or no one to wipe their tears. They feel trapped, confused and pressured. They start to feel conscious about their outward appearance. They begin to question who they are, perceiving themselves as someone they’re not. They also attempt, and actually do, stupid things for the sake of their satisfaction – they do it because they get pushed and pulled by peer pressure, because “everyone’s doing it,” and because they’re afraid of being viewed as a coward if they don’t do it. But the reality for these teenagers is that nothing seems to satisfy them, all because they push God aside. Teenagers try to write their own story, but they end up being terrible writers.

This doesn’t just apply to teenagers, though. It concerns every single human being. People can easily let themselves be consumed by fame or fortune – they get caught up in what the world has to offer, rather than what God has to offer. People believe they’ve got their whole life under control, trying to be the Author they’ll never be. That’s why the world is so corrupt and sinful. They push God aside, not putting Him first. And when God is not in your life, you’re well on your way to becoming a pile of mess that cannot be cleaned up until you walk back the other way to God. But the good news is, you can always go down on your knees asking God for His forgiveness and mercy, and He will give it to you despite all the things you’ve done and how far you’ve walked away from Him.

Society unfortunately seems to forget that God is the writer of our story. He has always been, and will always be. “Know that you were formed by God’s hands, dreamed up in His heart, and placed in this world for a purpose.” God wrote our entire story the nanosecond we were conceived into this world – He knew exactly then what our future held, because He planned it all out. He knew right from the start who each of us will become. I am still reminded that, naturally, people try to write some chapters of their story themselves, or they try to erase or question a particular sentence. I know I sometimes do, but generally I give God the pen, because I know He is a much better writer than I am. Society wants to be independent by writing their own stories, but only a bunch of scribbles and mistakes appear. No one can ever top God’s flawless writing. “The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.” (Proverbs 16:9)

We humans have our plans, worries, trials and questions that we want answered. Well, let God write it all down in your book. Let Him give you the answers instead of you trying to answer them and figuring everything out yourself. Give Him the pen. He is the Creator and Author of our lives, after all. All we can do now is patiently wait, and, in the meantime, read God’s story – the Bible.
